What mandatory information must be included on a coffee bag label in Spain
Share
One of the aspects that generates the most doubts among roasters who are setting up their brand is labeling. What information is mandatory? Where should it appear? In what language? In this article, we explain it to you in a practical way.
Applicable Legal Framework
In Spain, food labeling is mainly governed by Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 on the provision of food information to consumers, applicable to all food products, including coffee.
Mandatory information on the coffee bag
- Name of the food: for example, "Roasted coffee beans" or "Ground natural roast coffee."
- List of ingredients: in the case of pure coffee, it is sufficient to indicate "roasted coffee."
- Net quantity: the weight of the product in grams or kilograms.
- Best-before date.
- Special storage conditions.
- Name or business name and address of the responsible party.
- Country of origin: mandatory for coffee.
- Nutritional information: energy value, fat, carbohydrates, sugars, protein, and salt.
- Lot number: allows for product traceability.
In what language?
The labeling must be in Spanish as a minimum if the product is sold in Spain. If you sell in other EU countries, add the official language of that country.
Minimum font size
Mandatory information must appear in a minimum font size of 1.2 mm. For small packages with a surface area of less than 80 cm², the minimum is 0.9 mm.
What about specialty coffee?
For specialty coffee, it is recommended to voluntarily add: the roast date, the origin or farm, the botanical variety, the process, and the cupping notes. This information differentiates your product and connects with the specialty consumer.
