How to Choose Coffee Bags: A Roaster's Guide
Share
Choosing the right coffee bag is crucial for preserving your product's aroma, freshness, and presentation. Packaging whole bean coffee is not the same as ground coffee, nor is selling 100g samples the same as 1kg formats for hospitality. In this guide, we review everything a roaster should consider before buying their bags.
Difference between 250g, 500g, and 1kg bags
The format determines your target customer. The 250g is the king of specialty coffee: ideal for online sales, cafes, and gourmet stores. The 500g is the perfect intermediate format for regular customers and subscriptions. The 1kg is the workhorse for hospitality and B2B customers who buy in bulk. Many roasters work with all three simultaneously to cover their entire range of customers.
Why the degassing valve is important
Freshly roasted coffee releases CO₂ for days. If the bag doesn't have a valve, it will inflate and can even burst. The one-way degassing valve allows this gas to escape without letting oxygen in, keeping the coffee fresh and allowing you to package it immediately after roasting.
What the zip closure provides
The resealable zip closure allows the customer to open and close the bag for weeks without the coffee losing freshness. It's convenience for the buyer and, in addition, keeps your brand present in their kitchen every morning.
Flat bottom vs. doypack
The flat bottom stands on its own, with a more premium and stable presence on the shelf. The doypack stand-up is lighter, cheaper to ship, and more versatile. For specialty coffee, the flat bottom usually projects a more professional image, although the doypack is still a very valid and economical option.
Kraft, white, black, or color
The color communicates your brand's positioning: kraft conveys naturalness and craftsmanship; white, a clean and minimalist image; black, elegance and premium product; and colors (red, blue, yellow, holographic) help to stand out on the shelf. The important thing: don't choose solely for aesthetics, but also for format and barrier.
When to buy bags in stock
If you are just starting, need to restock quickly, or don't yet have high volume, bags in stock are the best option: you receive them in a few days and can label them with your brand's stickers. It's the most agile way and requires no high initial investment.
When to switch to custom bags
When your brand grows and your volume justifies it, bags printed with your design provide the definitive image upgrade. Customization is cost-effective starting from 1,000 units and allows you to control the format, material, finishes, valve, and closure.
