How to design your coffee brand's packaging from scratch

You have your coffee, you have your brand, and now it's time for the bag design. For many roasters, it's the most exciting and also the most intimidating step. Where do you start? We explain it to you step by step.

Before designing: define your positioning

Design is the visual translation of what you want to convey. Before opening any software, answer these questions: Who are you selling to? What values define your brand? What channel will your bag be seen in?

The color of the bag communicates before the design

The base color of the bag is the first message: kraft for artisanal, black for premium, white for minimalist. Choose it before thinking about the graphic design.

Key elements of a well-designed bag

  • Logo: it must be clearly visible from a distance and in small sizes.
  • Product name: the origin, variety, or blend name.
  • Cupping notes: flavor notes are the differentiating element of specialty coffee.
  • Mandatory information: weight, date, ingredients, company. This can go on the back.
  • QR code: links to the coffee's profile, farm, or process.

Front and back: how to distribute information

The front is for attracting attention: logo, name, distinctive visual element. The back is for information: cupping notes, description, legal mandatory information.

What file format do you need for printing

You will need the files in vector format (AI or PDF with outlines), in CMYK mode, at a minimum resolution of 300 dpi for rasterized elements. At Coffeebags.com, we provide you with the template for each format.

Test before mass printing

Before launching a run of 1,000 or 5,000 units, ask for a print proof. Colors on screen and on paper do not always match.
