Coffee bags with valves: why they are important

Many roasters starting out don't fully understand why a coffee bag valve is so important. However, it is one of the elements that most influences the preservation of aroma and the professional image of your product. Let us explain.

What happens to coffee after roasting

During roasting, coffee generates carbon dioxide (CO₂) which it continues to release for days. This process, called degassing, is completely natural, but it poses a problem when it comes to packaging: that gas needs to escape somewhere.

What is a degassing valve

The degassing valve is a small one-way component integrated into the bag. It allows CO₂ from the coffee to escape, but prevents oxygen from entering. This protects the coffee without the gas being trapped inside.

Why a bag without a valve can inflate

If you package freshly roasted coffee in a bag without a valve, the CO₂ will accumulate and the bag will inflate like a balloon, potentially even bursting the seals. The valve prevents this problem and allows you to package immediately after roasting, without having to wait days for the coffee to degas.

Valve, zip, and high barrier: the ideal combination

The valve solves the CO₂ problem, but coffee has three more enemies: oxygen, humidity, and light. That's why the winning combination is a valve + a resealable zip closure + a high-barrier structure with aluminum. The valve lets out the gas, the zip allows the bag to be reused without losing freshness, and the aluminum blocks light, oxygen, and humidity.

Which bag to choose for whole bean or ground coffee

Both whole bean and ground coffee benefit from the valve, but ground coffee is even more sensitive because it oxidizes faster due to having more exposed surface area. In both cases, a bag with a valve and a high barrier significantly extends the shelf life of the coffee.
