Sustainable coffee bags: what it really means and what options are available
Share
More and more roasters and consumers are asking for sustainable options in coffee packaging. It's a legitimate and growing demand. But behind the term "sustainable" there's a lot of variety and, sometimes, a lot of confusion. We help you understand what's really behind each option.
The problem with terms: not all are the same
Recyclable, biodegradable, compostable, plant-based... These are distinct terms that are often used interchangeably. They are not.
Recyclable
A recyclable bag can be processed in a recycling plant. The problem: multi-layer food packaging bags are difficult to recycle with the current infrastructure in Spain.
Biodegradable
A biodegradable material decomposes naturally in the environment. The decomposition time varies enormously: from weeks to hundreds of years depending on the conditions.
Compostable
A compostable material degrades under controlled conditions within a defined period, generally between 12 weeks and 6 months. Certified compostable bags (EN 13432 for industrial, OK compost HOME for domestic) are the most verifiable alternative.
The real commitment: barrier vs. sustainability
The most protective materials for coffee are the most difficult to manage at the end of their life. The most sustainable materials offer a lower barrier. There is no perfect solution yet.
What you can do today
- If sustainability is a core value of your brand: certified compostable bags are the most honest and verifiable option.
- If you prioritize coffee protection: a high-barrier bag with aluminum protects the product better.
- In any case: communicate transparently what type of material you use and how it should be managed at the end of its life.
How to communicate it to your customers
Avoid greenwashing: do not make claims you cannot prove. Honesty in sustainable communication is what builds long-term trust.
