Flat bottom vs. doypack: which bag to choose for coffee

Flat bottom, doypack, box bottom... If you've gotten lost among so many bag format names, you're not alone. We'll clearly explain the differences so you can choose the right format for your coffee.

What is a flat bottom bag?

The flat bottom bag (also known as a box bottom) has a rectangular base that allows it to stand upright on its own, like a box. It is the most premium-looking format and offers the best shelf presence.

What is a doypack?

The doypack (or stand-up pouch) is the classic bag with a bottom gusset that also stands upright, but with a more rounded and lighter shape. It is the most widespread and economical format.

Visual differences

The flat bottom has straight lines and a solid package appearance; the doypack is more curved and flexible. On the shelf, the flat bottom conveys a premium product, while the doypack gives a more accessible and approachable image.

Shelf stability

Both stand upright, but the flat bottom is more stable and better maintains its shape when full, especially in larger formats.

Actual capacity

For the same apparent size, the flat bottom usually makes better use of volume thanks to its rectangular base, making it ideal for 1 kg formats.

Brand image

If your positioning is premium or specialty, the flat bottom reinforces that perception. If you prioritize cost and lightness, the doypack performs perfectly.

Cost

The doypack is usually slightly more economical and lighter (lower shipping cost). The flat bottom has a slightly higher cost in exchange for a superior presentation.

Which to choose for 250 g and for 1 kg

For 250 g, both work very well: doypack if you prioritize cost, flat bottom if you are looking for a premium image. For 1 kg, the flat bottom is usually the best option for stability and volume utilization.

Recommendation for specialty roasters

If you are looking for a more premium and stable presentation, the flat bottom is one of the best options for specialty coffee. You can see our 250 g bags and 1 kg bags in both formats, or check out our custom bags.
